Social event app for an entertainment startup

Led a team of 4 engineers and designers in an Agile development cycle, crafted the product roadmap and go-to-market plan, defined success metrics, and coordinated with sales and marketing teams for product launch. The product secured $1.2 million in seed funding.

Overview

Background
Over the last two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has turned lives upside down across the globe. CrowdCore Technology Inc. company previously managed an offline activities ticket platform and event management website, allowing users to browse, create, and promote local events. However, the widespread closures effected by the pandemic included the cancellation of all offline events, and the vast number of contract annulments jeopardized the operation of our company.

Problem statement
How might we identify the needs of Event organizers and Attendees and establish an effective system that can find events that match their interests and manage event logistics efficiently?

Goal
To survive this change of circumstance, we decided to convert our traditional ticket sales platform to an event-based social media platform, incorporating the design of a new social entertainment app to forge deep connections with like-minded people through events. Meanwhile, the product can attract certain financial sponsorship to continue to maintain the operation of the platform.

My role
I was responsible for product design and conducting user research. The product was fuelled by my fast product integration, optimized design work flow and documentations. I work closely with marketing specialists,  content strategists, designers, engineers and PM.

The product was launched in June 2020 in Canada and helped our team secure $1.2 million in seed funding from MDC Media Group.

Design considerations

Make each component can evolve and grow

Since this app is a new product, we would only have a little content in the first version. Therefore, each component on the screen should be well-defined in how it works when the content expands.

Add " search" & "event chat" features

It will also enable attendees to discover new events, filter by category or interest, purchase tickets, coordinate with friends, and share their experiences with others.

Support hybrid and expand beyond traditional limits

Sell tickets to the venue on a global scale. Break regional boundaries and maximize venue’s ticket sales.

Design iterations

Card Sorting & Prototypes

I invited stakeholders to generate ideas about this new product and shared their values through paper card sorting. This process helped the discussion move smoothly and more open-mindedly.

From the product scope, I used Figma to create a prototype to show that the contents are precise and efficient to critique with PM and other designs from remote. ​

Tweak Design Elements in a Dynamic Content

When I discussed with PM, content and marketing specialists, they agreed to keep flexible sections for event detail pages in long-term operations. Some elements would be changed depending on the type of event.

Design solution

01. One organized platform

The homepage of an event social app provides an overview of the app's essential features, making it easy for users to discover events that match their interests and enabling them to access the app's main functions quickly and easily.

02. Effective--Buy Tickets Flow

Provide a seamless and secure ticket purchasing experience for users. The user can easily find the event they want to attend, select their ticket options, and make a payment securely. The confirmation page gives users a summary of their purchase, reducing confusion or errors. Finally, the app can send reminders to users and facilitate the check-in process, making it easier for attendees to access the event.

03. Make it chat-friendly to increase the frequency of the app usage

The chat function can enhance the user experience and provide a social aspect to the event social app. It can enable attendees to communicate with each other, share experiences, and coordinate logistics, making the event experience more enjoyable and efficient. Additionally, it can provide a platform for attendees to connect with other users and foster a sense of community around the events they attend.

As we work to develop this app, I wanted to get stakeholders' thoughts and ideas on how we can create a platform that will meet the needs of both event organizers and attendees. In the interview, I was able to find the opinion of the event social communication on this application. I heard specific answers about how the application would appeal in terms of business, and what advantages and suggestions it brought.

User testing insights

    Users were confused to find a difference between the “home screen” and the “discover screen”.
  • 02 More detailed profile page for event artists
    Event organizers wanted to include more details on the “event page”, such as adding exhibitions, press, and interviews.
  • 03 Clear visual decisions in displaying information
    Use various shapes to differentiate between private conversation and local community group chats.
  • 04 Take accessibility into design consideration
    Alternative text for images: Ensure that users who cannot see the images on the app can still understand what they depict.
    Proper contrast: It's essential to make sure that the contrast between the text and the background is high enough to be easily read.

Interaction Based on Research Findings

After testing the prototype with real users, I adjusted the design and the information hierarchy based on users' behaviours and decision-making processes.

Finding one: "Users were confused about distinguishing between private & community chats."

For users always want to spend only a little bit of time sorting. So I used icon and card sections to distinguish between them.

Finding two: Use word-of-mouth as an approach to reach more users

Invite friends to your squad. With each squad set up, users can share with friends. We wanted to expand and promote this community by sharing with users' immediate networks.

Takeaways​

Designing an event social app during COVID-19 presents unique challenges, as the pandemic has significantly impacted the event industry.​But, I realized this project has focused on user research and identified needs. Generally, if you follow users, a solution inevitably follows. By collaborating with stakeholders, including event organizers, attendees, and other team members. Enabled me to find out diverse perspectives and solutions.​Meanwhile, by taking ownership of the design process, from ideation to implementation. Such as creating design frameworks, conducting usability testing, and ensuring that the design is consistent across all. I made a tremendous advance in my professional career.​


Conclusion

If I had had more time, I could have collected survey responses from more users. And I believe I could create a website version and the mobile platform when we gave the presentation about this application to our investor Manuel DaCosta, CEO of Toronto-based media and broadcasting company MDC Media Group. I feel made a tremendous advance in my professional career to hearing that he was very satisfied and interested in this product and and facilitated our first equity funding, securing $1.2 million USD in seed funding. While the pandemic has brought personal and economic devastation globally, the changes it necessitated also provided opportunities for growth that may otherwise have not existed. As I adapted to these changes, I proudly recognized the resilience and adaptability inherent within my character and identified within myself the eagerness to rise to a challenge and to overcome hurdles through innovation.

Our main findings include the following:
  • Many ticket-purchasing apps charge high fees and additional charges for tickets, which can be a turn-off for customers and may make events more expensive.
  • Existing purchasing ticket platforms have limited customization options for event pages and branding, making it difficult for organizers to create a unique and memorable event experience.
  • Some ticket-purchasing sites may have a poor user experience, with confusing navigation, slow load times, and other issues that can frustrate customers and discourage them from completing their purchases.
  • Most event apps focus on organizer promotion instead of attracting attendees.
  • Few products target late adolescents, a key demographic for event products, who are motivated to explore new and exciting experiences.
The results motivated us to:
  1. Focus on the Buy Ticket Requirements in our following surveys and interviews.
  2. Use a survey to verify if we understand the factors that people consider when purchasing event tickets.

We first used a survey to 1) help us narrow down our target user group and 2) quickly learn about the most critical RSVP/Buy Ticket Requirement concepts and the pain points attendees encounter when buying tickets. We chose ages in the ranges of ​18-24 & 25-34 as our target audience based on the results of our domain research.

We then conducted semi-structured interviews with event planner experts and young people 1) to gain advice from experts and 2) to dive deeper into the problems attendees purchase tickets.We created an affinity map as a group to identify themes from our qualitative interview data.

Redefining Our User Group

Consistent with our domain research, we decided to focus on those users aged 18~34 who are often interested in music events, comedy shows, sports events, and outdoor activities.Our expert interviews also taught us something unexpected: Young attendees always want to do something with the least time and steps. You must have an adequate reward system if you want them to stop and do something to share.Therefore, we eventually focused our users on late adolescents, emerging adults and mature adults.

Key Takeaways

Based on the survey & interview results, our users aged between 18 and 34 tend to be more interested in attending events and purchasing tickets. When buying tickets, we delineated the different needs of late adolescents, emerging adults and mature adults.

Design

Ideation

We conducted an informed brainstorming session based on the evidence we collected from user research. Each member first came up with a variety of ideas individually. Then we organize all the ideas into different concepts.

Card Sorting

Eventually, we use card sorting to narrow our ideas to two significant themes to identify patterns and insights into how users perceive and organize information—understanding how users group and categorize information can create more intuitive and user-friendly navigation structures, labels, and information architectures.

Design Alternatives

According to our needs, we then showed the following concepts and scenarios to potential users, asking them about their preferences and feedback on our designs.

Concept 1

Our first concept leverages "Sign in CTA" notification to attention-grabbing encourage users to increase their chances of the user noticing the message and taking action. With the user's input, the system can generate personalized events for the user.

Concept 2

Concept 2  provides multiple sessions of the event and enables users to switch to Listings/Calendar, It brings attendees more flexibility in choosing a session that fits their schedule and preferences and organizers can potentially generate more revenue by selling more tickets, especially if the event is in high demand.

Concept 3

With the increasing use of smartphones and tablets, a large percentage of users access event websites and ticketing platforms through mobile devices. Our third concept provides a comprehensive, step-by-step responsive mobile version of the event detail page which provides a better user experience by allowing users to view the event details in an optimized format on their mobile devices. It can lead to increased conversions and ticket sales.

Concept 4

Concept 4 aims to improve the user experience, reduce the number of steps and simplify the interface; organizers can increase the chances of users completing their purchase. A clear and easy-to-use interface makes users more likely to complete their purchases and not abandon their carts. Meanwhile, by highlighting related events or offering upgrades, organizers can increase revenue and provide users with more options.

User Feedback & Design Implications

All these concepts are necessary, but after gathering feedback from 15 users, we decided to proceed with Concepts 2&4 as our core concept and incorporate Concepts 1&3 into our final design.We also derived several design implications from participants' feedback on Concepts 2 and 4. Working with a PM and Lead Software Developer, I organized and facilitated 15 user testing sessions during a Usability hub and remote user testing sessions having the users go through scenarios with the prototype I designed in Figma.
